Applying for a Canada Visa Online: The Ultimate Guide

The easiest way to apply for your Canada visa is online!

Millions of people visit Canada every year, and many need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to enter the country.

If you’re planning a trip to Canada, you may be wondering: Do I need an eTA?

How do I apply for one? And how long will it take before I can get my application approved and printed out? Well, not to worry—you’ll find all the answers you’re looking for right here!

Who Needs a Canada Visa?

Before applying for your visa, you must know whether or not you require one. Visas are issued only to those intending to visit Canada and meet the requirements set forth by Canada’s immigration laws.

You may need a visa if:

  • Your country of origin is not part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), or if it is, you still wish to travel to Canada by land or sea.
  • Your purpose of travel involves work in Canada. If this is true, an employer must provide proof that you have been offered employment and are eligible for a job in Canada before a visa can be issued.

It depends on how long you intend to stay:

  • If less than six months: No need for any permit; book your flight/train/bus ticket and show up at the border on time! Yay!
  • If more than six months but less than one year: You may need either an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) or a TRV (Temporary Resident Visa). Both allow entry into Canada with minimal paperwork involved so long as they are valid when crossing over into our borders—which means that both types must be renewed before expiry dates pass (and we don’t want any surprises!).

Who is exempt from needing a visa?

If you are a citizen of one of the countries exempt from needing a visa, then go straight to step 2. If you’re not sure whether your country is exempt, read on. then, you do not need an eTA:

Where to Apply for a Canada eTA?

You can apply for an eTA online through the official website of the Canadian government. There are two ways to go about this:

Then click on “Next”. You’ll be asked questions about medical conditions, past travel history and criminal record(s). Answer each question and! Remember that lying on these forms could result in serious legal consequences later.

Application Process and Documentation Requirements for an Electronic Travel Authorization for Canada

If you are a citizen of one of the following countries, you do not need an eTA to visit Canada:

  • Australia
  • Andorra
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Brunei Darussalam (for stays up to 7 days)
  • Croatia (for stays up to 90 days) -Cyprus (for stays up to 90 days) -Czech Republic (for stays up to 90 days)

Application Processing Times for Canada ETAs

The processing of an ETA application varies from person to person and depends on the time of year, country of origin and other factors.

For example, if you are applying during peak season (such as summer) or if you are originating from Africa or Asia, it can take up to 5 days for your application to be processed.

If it’s an off-peak season (such as winter), your ETAs may be processed in a few minutes.

How Long is an ETA valid?

An eTA is valid for five years so that you can travel to Canada anytime during that period.

If you have permanent resident status, you can use it as your proof of identity when entering Canada.

But, if you want to enter Canada using one of the temporary resident visas (for example, a working holiday visa or student visa), then an eTA would not be valid for travelling purposes as these visas are only valid for six months at most.

I asked Questions about the eTA and Permanence Visas in Canada.

What is the difference between an ETA and a permanent visa?

An ETA is a type of electronic travel authorization that allows citizens of certain countries to visit Canada without obtaining a visa.

The main difference between an ETA and a permanent visa is that the former lasts for five years, whereas the latter lasts for ten years once granted.

What’s the difference between an ETA and a temporary visa?

Temporary visas are valid for up to three years and allow holders to stay in Canada for up to six months.

Temporary visas can be obtained from Canadian embassies or consulates around the globe, but they must first be authorized by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC).

Once approved for one, it will also act as your electronic travel authorization!

The eTA isn’t difficult to get, so there’s no excuse not to have one when planning to travel to Canada!

The eTA is a free, easy-to-obtain document that allows you to enter Canada without needing a visa.

It’s valid for five years and can be used multiple times during that period without having to.

After entering your information into the online application form and paying the processing fee, you’ll receive your eTA via email within minutes.

You will also get an email when it expires (which will be about four years from now).

Print out this confirmation page; otherwise, you won’t have proof of your travel authorization!

The Last Word

The eTA process is pretty straightforward, so if you’re a citizen of one country who needs an eTA to visit Canada, make sure to apply for yours well before your flight.
