UK Visa: So you’ve decided to visit the UK and see Big Ben, Buckingham Palace or Stonehenge.
You’re all set to plan your trip and get a flight, but then it hits you – you need a visa!
Don’t worry, though, because we have created this step-by-step guide to help make the process as easy as possible.
Applying for a UK Visa Online – A Step-by-Step Guide
This guide will give you everything you need to know about getting a UK Visa.
Step 1: Register for an account
Once you have registered for an account, you need to activate it.
You can do this by clicking on the link in the confirmation email you will receive from us.
This will take you through a short process that includes entering your password, selecting your details and providing answers to security questions.
Once activated, you can log in using the username and password we gave you when creating your account.
You can use this account for up to five years and make many applications during this time without re-submit all your personal information each time – saving time and effort!
Step 2: Complete your application form
Your application form should look something like this:
Have you provided all the details we’ve asked for? If not, go back and make sure you have. The information must be correct so it can be entered into the right databases and records.
Is your handwriting easy to read? If not, make sure you print in block capitals or use a computer or smartphone to type instead of writing by hand.
Do not use abbreviations (e.g., “The UK” instead of “United Kingdom”) as these may confuse our staff when they check your application form before sending it off for processing at passport offices across England, Scotland and Wales!
Step 3: Uploading documents
- Upload your documents
- Please review your application before submitting it.
- Submit the application
Step 4: Paying the visa fee
Once you have filled in the online application form and uploaded your supporting documents, it is time to pay the visa fee.
You can pay for your application using any major credit or debit card. You will be given a unique reference number which must be quoted at the time of payment.
If you are paying by debit card, we recommend you use one with a four-digit number as we cannot accept transactions with three-digit numbers.
Once we receive confirmation of your payment, we will send an acknowledgement letter via email within two working days stating what stage of processing your application is at and when you can expect to hear from us again if there is anything further from our partner organisations or us (which may include HMRC/NHS/DWP etc.)
Step 5: Book an appointment at a visa application centre
- Check the list of visa application centres in your country.
- Book an appointment online or by phone
- Bring the following documents to your appointment, along with two passport photos:
- Your passport and any previous passports (if available)
- Proof of travel arrangements (if applicable)
- The completed Visa Application Form (VAF) and fee receipt (if applicable)
- A letter from your employer confirming that you are employed there if it applies to you.
Step 6: Submit your application and biometrics at the visa application centre
You will need to bring all your documents, as well as your biometrics and payment receipt. You may also be asked to apply for other proof of identity or eligibility.
If you are applying inside the country where you live, use the same visa application form you submitted when applying online, but instead of uploading documents, you’ll need to bring them along with you.
If you are applying outside the country where you live, complete this form in advance and submit it at a visa application centre when making a biometric appointment; it should include all the information needed for your online application.
