Congo Visa: Congolese are some of the friendliest people in Africa, but the government has strict regulations for entering the country.

If you’re planning a trip to this fascinating nation, here’s what you need to know.

You will need a visa to enter Congo. All nationalities must have a visa to enter the country, including children under 18 years old.

Visas are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and can be obtained in person or through an agent.

The process takes around 2-3 business days and costs $50 per person ($30 for children).

Applicants must fill out an application form (available from your travel agency) and submit 1 photograph taken within the last six months that meets specific requirements (size 35mm x 45mm; white background; black-and-white clothing only).

These documents should be submitted with proof of payment in US dollars or euros (cash only).

If you’re using an agent, they will handle this process on your behalf and confirm your hotel reservation.

You can apply for a visa by post or in person at the Embassy of the Republic of the Congo in London or Washington.

Requirements to receive a visa

To receive a visa, you must provide the following documents:

  • A passport is valid for at least 6 months.
  • An official photo-size colour photograph of yourself taken within the last 6 months and glued to page 2 of your passport in the designated area. Your full name, date and place of birth, and nationality should be visible on this page of your passport.
  • Two (2) copies of the completed visa application form (form B1/B2), signed by you and submitted together with two recent coloured passport-size photographs affixed at the specified places following these instructions;
  • One letter from the sponsor stating why they are sponsoring you; this could be a friend or family member who is supporting you or an organization that has invited you as a speaker;
  • One letter from the guarantor states that they will pay any fines if there is any problem with your stay in Congo;

Documentation to apply for a visa

You will need to have the following documents with you when applying for your visa:

  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
  • One photo
  • Flight ticket or itinerary (may be submitted later)

Hotel reservations or photocopy of hotel reservation confirmation letter, if booked online. Or, a photocopy of the bank statement can be provided instead. If staying with friends or family, please provide a letter stating their address and contact details and proof that they are available to receive you during your stay in Congo (e.g., a school report card). The letter must also contain the names and contact details of your hosts.

  • Visa validity: 90 days. It is valid for multiple entries and exits within 6 months, starting from the day you enter Congo through any airport or land border crossing. The visa is also suitable for a single entry or exit.

For those born in Congo before 1960, obtaining a visa may be easier than other citizens.

Suppose you can provide proof of your birth in the country on or before December 31st 1960, including your passport and a copy of the birth certificate.

In that case, your visa application will likely be approved immediately.

If you have been outside Congo for more than five years or haven’t lived there since before 1981, it will be harder for you to get a visa.
